Tend your Inner Garden...7 Tips for preventing working mom burnout

Posted on April 18, 2023
As a working mother, you are a true multitasking hero, constantly juggling your career, family, and personal life. You strive to give your best in every aspect of your life, but with all the demands, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and burned out.

The good news is, you don't have to do it alone. With some uncommon wisdom and practical strategies, you can prevent burnout and keep your energy and enthusiasm for both your work and your family.

Think of yourself as a beautiful garden that needs nurturing to bloom. Here are some tips that my clients and I have found to be effective in preventing burnout and taking care of yourself:

Plan your Garden

What are you wanting to grow in yourself? Better relationships, more money, a new house, improved sleep, or starting your own business? Write down.

Every gardener learns the correct season to plant, water, and cultivate their gardens.

As the expert on your own life’s needs, hormones, desires, goals, and responsibilities, only YOU can make a plan that speaks to your situation and what will truly make you feel satisfied and dare I say it…happy!

Cultivate Self-Compassion

As a working mom, you may feel the pressure to be perfect in every role you play. However, it's essential to remember that nobody is perfect, and that's okay. You are doing the best you can, and it's crucial to treat yourself with kindness and compassion.

Imagine yourself as a tulip[ coming up in the early Spring, fragile yet resilient. Be gentle with yourself and take small steps to cultivate self-compassion. For instance, you can start by giving yourself credit for all the things you're already doing right, no matter how small they may seem. Think: making your bed, feeding the kids each day, clocking in at work each day.

Prioritize Your Time

Time is a precious commodity, and as a working mom, you need to use it wisely. Prioritizing your time and focusing on the things that matter most can help you avoid burnout.

Think of yourself as a busy bee, buzzing from task to task. Make a to-do list and prioritize the most important tasks first. Say NO to anything that isn't essential or doesn't align with your priorities. (Refer back to step 1 and the grand plan and vision you have for your life).

Remember, you can't do it all, but you can do the most important things exceptionally well.

Find Support

It takes a village to raise a child, and the same goes for preventing burnout. You don't have to go through it alone. Seek out support from other working moms who understand what you're going through. Join a support group or online community where you can connect with other women dealing with similar challenges.

Think of yourself as a bird, soaring high above the clouds with your flock. Enlist the help of family and friends and delegate tasks that can lighten your load. Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Take Care of Your Physical Health

Your physical health plays a crucial role in preventing burnout. Taking care of yourself physically can help you feel better mentally and emotionally.

Think of yourself as a tree, with deep roots and a sturdy trunk. Eat a healthy diet, get enough sleep, and exercise regularly. Take breaks throughout the day to stretch, breathe, or take a walk. These small moments of self-care can make a big difference in how you feel.

Make Time for Yourself

It's essential to take care of yourself, and that includes making time for yourself. Remember, you are not just a working mom but also an individual with your own unique interests and passions.

Think of yourself as a beautiful flower, blooming with joy and vibrancy. Take time to do things you enjoy, whether it's reading a book, taking a bubble bath, or going for a hike. When you take care of yourself, you'll have more energy and enthusiasm for everything else in your life.

In conclusion, as a working mom, preventing burnout is all about finding balance and taking care of yourself.
